The changes will reduce the number of district stations from 25 to 22. McCarthy said the transformation will also allow more than 100 officers to move from desk jobs to beat patrol duties.

“The backbone of any police department is the beat officer, and our initiatives are based on the beat officer,” McCarthy said.

Meanwhile, 341 detectives will be moving from the shuttered Harrison and Grand Central Areas to three other buildings on the North, South and Far South sides that house the majority of the department’s detectives.
