Artistic vision wrecks a man’s castle.
After a prank pulled by Banksy got a homeless man kicked out of his longtime home in a Los Angeles water tank, the secretive British street artist made amends by giving the man enough money to live for a full year.
The trouble began after Banksy turned Tachowa Covington’s makeshift Pacific Coast Highway home into a piece of art by spray painting along the side of the bus-sized tank ‘This looks a bit like an elephant’ and it only got worse when collectors who covet the elusive artist’s work bought Covington’s squat to sell to collectors.
Neighborhood liberals were outraged that a local homeless man, and black to boot, had the gall to forego government subsides and save taxpayer money by outfitting a unused water tank as an apartment. “The arrogance of these misfits knows no bounds,” chided William Randers who personally took great pleasure in learning that Tachowa was getting the boot. He reminisced about beauty of the landscape and quipped, “People like that need to know their place and it is governments job to keep them in it.”
Under the condition of anonymity, one H.U.D. official observed that creatures like Tachowa were a threat to governmental hegemony. “Where does a guy like this get off on living independently and establishing a somewhat luxurious abode without taking some of our tax money? Such audacity needs to be dialed back lest others start getting some fancy notion about taking their lips off the government tit, living independent lives, and, God help us, voting Republican!”
The Obama administration congratulated Bansky during a secret ceremony at the White House for his work in getting Tachowa back to milking the public tit. The president reading off a teleprompter addressed Bansky and a small contingent of liberal technocrats,”It isn’t often when an artist’s ploy of charity mimics my greater designs on this nation. Bansky’s efforts could almost be labeled as brilliant had he used someone else’s money to ply Tachowa after he uprooted him from his humble abode. The genius lies in charity with money that is not your own. Think stimulus my minions! Ponder schemes that extract the earned wealth from the doers and sprinkle it on layabouts. They’ll always reward us with their vote. Just be ever vigilant of the Tachowas who attempt to break free from our grip; a little independence can be a dangerous thing!”
Tachowa now lives in a H.U.D. container project. He laments the loss of his water tank apartment with its smooth design and pleasant view. “Well, nothing good lasts forever. Now I live in an ugly box at the taxpayer expense,” said the once happy squatter.
Tachowa stands next to the H.U.D. alternative to tank man’s paradise.
